Our easy homemade garlic bread recipe is the perfect complement to any meal. Few things complete a meal like a slice of warm, buttery garlic bread fresh from the oven. Our easy homemade garlic bread recipe is golden on the outside, soft in the middle, and loaded with garlicky and buttery goodness. It’s the kind of side that turns any dinner into comfort food heaven.

Garlic bread is a classic Italian American side dish that’s loved around the world for its simplicity and bold flavor. Made with crusty bread, butter, garlic, and herbs, this dish brings warmth and richness to every meal.

Whether you’re serving it with pasta, soup, or just snacking straight off the pan, this recipe delivers that perfect mix of crunch, butter, and flavor. Simple ingredients, quick prep, and no shortcuts, just pure, classic goodness made right in your kitchen. A perfect side dish for some of my favorite pasta dishes, such as my penne pomodoro recipe or gnocchi alla Sorrentino, to bring a taste of Italy into your home kitchen.

Ingredients

Get set before you start! One of my favorite sayings is that an ounce of preparation equals a pound of cure. A few minutes spent prepping and measuring your ingredients makes cooking smoother, faster, and way more fun.

Garlic Bread Steps 1

  • Add the softened butter to a mixing bowl.
  • Add the garlic, parsley, salt, and parmesan cheese to the butter and mix all the ingredients until all have been combined
Garlic Bread Steps 2
  • Slice your choice of bread down the middle to create open-faced halves.
  • Take the garlic and butter mixture and spread it over each side of the bread.
Garlic Bread Steps 3
  • Place the bread on a foil-lined baking sheet butter side up
  • Place on the top rack of the preheated oven and cook for 15-20 minutes until the edges of the garlic bread are golden brown
  • Remove and slice into serving sizes and serve hot
  • Tent with aluminum foil or a towel to keep warm if needed

Recipe Variations & Adjustments

  • Sprinkle shredded mozzarella on top for cheesy garlic bread.
  • Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a little spicy kick. Try roasted garlic for a sweeter, deeper flavor.
  • Mix in fresh herbs like basil, thyme, or chives for color and aroma.
  • Brush the bread with compound butter made from olive oil, lemon zest, and sea salt.

Chef Tips

  • Buy a nice loaf of bread for the best results.
  • Use softened (not melted) butter so it spreads evenly.
  • Don’t skimp on garlic; fresh cloves make a huge difference.
  • Bake cut-side up for a crisp top and soft bottom.
  • Toast under the broiler for 1–2 minutes at the end for an extra level of crunch.
  • Finish with a drizzle of olive oil or a sprinkle of flaky sea salt right before serving.

Serving Suggestions & Pairings

  • Serve garlic bread alongside spaghetti, lasagna, soups, or salads.
  • Pair with creamy pasta dishes, such as Fettuccine Alfredo, tomato bisque, or a fresh Caprese salad, for a balanced meal.
  • Our pizza dip recipe is a great compliment for a dinner party or family gathering.
  • Non-Alcoholic Beverage: Sparkling water with lemon or Italian soda for a refreshing contrast.
  • Wine Style: Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc both crisp enough to cut through the butter and garlic.
  • Beer Style: A light pilsner or pale ale balances the richness beautifully.

Garlic bread may be simple, but it’s one of those sides that everyone reaches for first. Each slice is warm, buttery, and loaded with flavor! Perfect for dipping, pairing, or eating straight off the pan. Whether it’s part of your Italian dinner spread or your go-to comfort bite, this homemade version proves that a few basic ingredients can make something truly unforgettable.

How to Store and Reheat

  • Store leftovers wrapped in foil at room temperature for up to 1 day or in the fridge for up to 3 days
  • Reheat in the oven or a toaster oven at 350°F for 5–7 minutes or until warmed through.
  • For best texture, reheat wrapped in foil,
  • Avoid the microwave, it makes the crust chewy and uneven.
