Get set before you start! One of my favorite sayings is that an ounce of preparation equals a pound of cure. A few minutes spent prepping and measuring your ingredients makes cooking smoother, faster, and way more fun.

Chef Tips

  • When the cooking process is completed, remove the ham from the slow cooker and let it rest for 15-20 minutes before serving or slicing if you use an unsliced ham.
  • Please don't overcook the ham as it can dry out even in the slow cooker. Baste every hour for best results.

Recipe Variations & Adjustments

  • Rub the ham with Dijon mustard or brown mustard, then add the brown sugar.
  • You can also add other seasonings, such as cloves and cinnamon, to complement the natural flavors of the ham and glaze.
  • If you're not a fan of pineapple, you can easily replace the pineapple juice with apple juice, orange juice, or your favorite beer.

Storage and Reheating

  • Store any leftover ham refrigerated in an airtight container for 5-6 days. It can also be frozen in a freezer-safe container for 6-8 weeks.
  • Reheat in a skillet with a small amount of butter or olive oil until warmed.

Recipe FAQ's

Can a ham be overcooked in a slow cooker?

Absolutely. Although slow cookers cook low and slow, you can still overcook just about anything you make in the slow cooker. Remember that you're starting with a fully cooked ham, so all you're really doing in the slow cooker is reheating and infusing it with flavors.

How long does it take to cook a spiral ham in a slow cooker?

Typically, a spiral ham needs about 4-6 hours on low heat in a slow cooker. The exact time depends on the size of the ham and the slow cooker you are using.

    Hi Chef Dennis,
I love your recipes! I want to make this tasty-looking ham. My question is:
Where do you (or do you?) use the sliced pineapple other than as an option in step 7?
If you don’t use these slices, can I just buy and use fresh pineapple juice and how much would I need?
(Or I guess that means they’re available for a pineapple upside down cake. )
    Thank you for the clarification.

Absolutely, you can just use pineapple juice if you'd rather not buy the slices. Six ounces of juice should be enough.
